Its impressive presence in the night sky has inspired countless myths, legends and spiritual beliefs. However, in modern times, the growing problem of light pollution has threatened our ability to observe and appreciate the Milky Way. In this article, we will explore how various cultures, including the Chinese, Greeks, Zulu, Hopi, Navajo, and Mojave, have interpreted the Milky Way, and discuss the detrimental effects of light pollution on our ability to experience this celestial wonder.

In Chinese mythology, there are several stories one is that the Milky Way is known as the "Silver River" and is associated with the romantic legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver. According to this tale, the cowherd and the weaver are separated by the Silver River and are only allowed to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, during the Qixi Festival.

The following story tells us that the Milky Way is The Celestial River (天河, Tiānhé) was the abode of the goddess Chang'e, the symbol of immortality. Legend has it that, upon stealing the pill of immortality, Chang'e took refuge in the Milky Way, creating an eternal separation from her husband, Emperor Houyi.

In Greek mythology, the Milky Way was the product of milk spilt by Hera, queen of Olympus, while she was breastfeeding the mortal Hercules. This celestial milk gave rise to the galaxy we know today.

In the mythology of the Zulu people of South Africa, the Milky Way is known as "inkanyezi", which means "stars". They believe that it is a path that spirits take to travel to the afterlife. The appearance of the Milky Way in the night sky is considered a sign of the presence of ancestral spirits watching over the living.

In Hopi mythology: The Milky Way was the backbone of Mother Earth, a vital connection between the underworld and heaven. A symbol of the deep connection between the Earth and its inhabitants.

In Navajo mythology: The Milky Way was the path traveled by the First Man and the First Woman in their search for the Promised Land. A journey full of challenges and trials that finally brought them home.

In Mojave mythology: view the Milky Way as the "Ghost River." According to Mojave lore, the Milky Way was created by the antics of Coyote, a prominent figure in their mythology. It is said that Coyote kicked a bag of flour, causing it to explode and spread across the sky, creating the luminous band we now know as the Milky Way. Furthermore, the Milky Way was the home of the ancestral spirits, who from their heavenly abode watched over the well-being of the Mojave people. A space of deep spiritual connection and ancestral wisdom.

Recovering the connection with the Milky Way:

By observing the Milky Way, we connect with our past, present and future. It is a reminder of our place in the universe, a space for reflection and deep inspiration. Regaining the ability to see it is a crucial step in preserving our connection to the cosmos and the cultural heritage that defines us.

Unfortunately, increasing light pollution is threatening our ability to see the Milky Way. As urban areas continue to grow and artificial lighting becomes more prevalent, the problem of light pollution has increased. Light pollution occurs when artificial light from urban and industrial areas illuminates the night sky, obscuring the stars, and depriving us of this natural spectacle.

If we want to guarantee that future generations can enjoy its beauty. Light pollution must be reduced by implementing control measures and the responsible use of artificial light is essential.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-59065044459046158962024-01-27T10:30:00.000-08:002024-01-27T10:56:43.739-08:00Thought of the day
"It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then."

- Lewis Carroll
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-34474095849066908662024-01-18T10:30:00.000-08:002024-01-27T12:07:24.104-08:001177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed by Eric H. Cline.
The book explores the widespread social collapse that occurred at the end of the Bronze Age, around 1177 BC. Cline delves into the factors that led to the fall of several major civilizations in the Mediterranean and Near East during this period, including the Hittites, Mycenaeans, and Minoans.

Cline investigates several potential causes of this collapse, such as natural disasters, climate change, invasions by the so-called "Sea Peoples," and internal social and political unrest. He examines archaeological and historical evidence to reconstruct a compelling narrative of the events and circumstances that may have contributed to the simultaneous collapse of multiple advanced societies.

The book makes a good, accessible presentation of complex historical and archaeological concepts and offers readers a fascinating look at a crucial moment in ancient history. In this book, he sheds light on the interconnectedness of ancient civilizations and the fragility of even the most advanced societies in the face of systemic challenges.

It offers an opportunity to explore the resilience and vulnerability of human societies throughout history. This book provides a compelling narrative that underscores the impact of human decisions and actions on the course of history.

Eric H. Cline's exploration of the late Bronze Age collapse invites us to consider the human experiences of the individuals who lived in these ancient societies. By examining the factors that led to the fall of multiple civilizations, the book leads us to contemplate the human stories behind these cataclysmic events. It encourages us to empathize with the people who lived through these tumultuous times and to appreciate the ways in which their lives were shaped by larger historical forces.

Additionally, it also highlights the interconnectedness of human societies and the ways in which the actions of one group of people can have far-reaching consequences for others. This interconnection underscores the importance of empathy, understanding, and cooperation in the human experience.

Overall, this book serves as a reminder of humanity's shared experiences across time and space. It invites readers to engage with the complexities of history, to appreciate the human stories that underpin historical events, and to consider the enduring relevance of ancient lessons to our contemporary world.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-10233253765942191672023-12-14T10:30:00.000-08:002024-01-27T11:37:32.625-08:00 How We Do It: The Evolution and Future of Human Reproduction by Robert D. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin
Is a biography published in 2005, it details the life and career of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist often referred to as the "father of the atomic bomb" due to his pivotal role in the Manhattan Project during World War II.

The book provides an in-depth look at Oppenheimer's life, from his early years and education to his work on the Manhattan Project and later life. It explores his personal and professional relationships, his political affiliations, and the ethical dilemmas he faced in developing nuclear weapons.

Oppenheimer's story is a fascinating exploration of the human capacity for creation and destruction, all bound up in one person.

The book highlights Oppenheimer's brilliance and his significant contributions to science, as well as explores the life of one of the first scientists as a public servant, also his deep love for literature and philosophy. Additionally delves into the ethical dilemmas he faced in developing nuclear weapons. This concern: grappling with the moral implications of our actions and acknowledging the responsibility that comes with knowledge and power.

The detailed account of Oppenheimer's public humiliation during the security hearing, mainly based on unfounded accusations and suspicions, underscores the importance of fairness, justice, and evidence principles.

Ultimately, American Prometheus offers a nuanced picture of Oppenheimer as a flawed, complex human being dealing with extraordinary circumstances. It prompts readers to reflect on the ethical implications of scientific advancements and the responsibilities of those who hold the power to change the world.

The book is notable for its comprehensive research and balanced portrayal of Oppenheimer. It won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography, as well as the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.

As of August 6

I want to tell you that I have seen the movie Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan.

I liked it, the way of telling the story is somewhat complex and interesting, but if you haven't read anything about Oppenheimer or his biography books, you may get a little lost.

Very good special effects and audio.

The sexual scenes, for me, are completely unnecessary.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-89257898503723511742023-06-15T10:00:00.001-07:002023-07-27T11:34:56.922-07:00Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Applebaum
In this book by Anne, explores the rising trend of authoritarianism and nationalist populism across the globe. Drawing her personal experiences and academic expertise outlines the risks of abandoning democratic values and institutions in favour of authoritarian regimes. The book argues that these regimes, despite their promises of stability or national rejuvenation, often lead to decreased personal freedoms, increased corruption, and societal division.

One of the book's major themes is the fragility of democracy and the ease with which it can be undermined by those who put power, ideology, or group identity above the principles of equality, individual freedom, and justice. From my point of view, this is a serious concern.

The exploration of the consequences of abandoning democratic values. It may serve as a warning for liberties, about the potential dangers of sliding towards authoritarian regimes and away from the democratic principles that underpin true democracies beliefs.

I cannot deny that it is a book has tends to instil fear and mistrust, personally, I do not think we are in such a bad place yet, but it is an interesting warning that there is a global trend towards totalism. It's sad to me that we're still having these conversations.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-13846420270962915832023-06-13T10:00:00.001-07:002023-10-19T17:08:15.790-07:00Thought of the day.Religion is regarded by the ignorant as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.
by Lucius Annaeus Seneca

This quote, often attributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca, is a provocative statement about the role of religion in society. While it may be tempting to dismiss religion as solely the province of the ignorant or the rulers, the reality is more complex.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that religion has played an important role in the lives of many people throughout history. For some, religion provides a sense of purpose, community, and comfort in times of hardship. Furthermore, religion has inspired some of the greatest works of art, music, and literature in human history.

However, it is also true that some people have used religion to justify harmful actions or to gain power and control over others. This is where the idea of religion being "useful" to rulers comes into play. It is important to recognize when religion is being used in this way and to hold those who abuse its power accountable.

In terms of the "wise" regarding religion as false, this is a matter of personal belief and philosophical outlook. While some people may reject religion as incompatible with reason or scientific understanding, others may find meaning and value in religious teachings alongside their intellectual pursuits.

In short, while this quote may contain some elements of truth, it is important to approach the role of religion in society with nuance and an open mind.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-20583462818192985122023-05-18T10:30:00.014-07:002023-05-18T10:30:00.147-07:00Spain: The Center of the World 1519-1682 by Robert Goodwin
Robert Goodwin's Spain: The Center of the World 1519-1682 is a comprehensive and engaging history of Spain's rise to power as a global empire during the 16th and 17th centuries. Goodwin begins by tracing the origins of Spain's empire to the marriage of Isabel de Castilla and Fernando de Aragón in 1469. This union created a powerful new kingdom that would soon begin to expand across Europe, the Americas, and the Philippines.

Goodwin then goes on to discuss the reigns of Charles V, Philip II, and Philip IV. These three monarchs were all instrumental in Spain's rise to power. Charles V, who was also Holy Roman Emperor, was a brilliant and ambitious ruler who expanded Spain's empire to its greatest extent. Philip II was a devout Catholic who used Spain's power to defend the Catholic Church against the Protestant Reformation. Philip IV was a cultured and sophisticated ruler who presided over a golden age of Spanish art and literature.

The book then goes on to discuss the reigns of Charles V's son, Philip II, and Philip II's grandson, Philip IV. During these reigns, Spain continued to expand its empire and became a major power in Europe.

However, Spain's golden age was not to last forever. The book also discusses the challenges that Spain faced during this period, such as the Dutch Revolt, the Thirty Years' War, the War of the Spanish Succession and also addresses how difficult it was to get the representatives of the crown in the New World to respect the freedom and property of the natives. These conflicts drained Spain's resources from her and led to the decline of her empire from her.

The book concludes with the death of Charles II in 1700. Charles II was the last Habsburg king of Spain, and his death marked the end of Spain's golden age.

Overall, this book is a well-written and informative book that provides a comprehensive overview of Spain's rise and fall as a global empire. The book is well-researched and draws on a wide range of sources, including primary documents, secondary sources, and archaeological evidence. It is an excellent book that is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of Spain or the history of the world.

The book is also well-organized and easy to read. Goodwin does an excellent job of weaving together complex historical events into a coherent narrative. The book is also full of interesting anecdotes and insights that make it a pleasure to read.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-45555956618391235952023-04-13T10:30:00.002-07:002023-05-08T16:32:04.489-07:00The Greater Union by Ron Horsley
The Greater Union is a science fiction novel by Ron Horsley, published in 2021. The book was first published in Hebrew in 2015 and in English in 2016.

In the book, Harari argues that humans are on the verge of a new era, in which they will become gods. He argues that humans have already achieved god-like powers in the fields of agriculture, medicine, and technology. He also argues that humans are now developing new technologies that will allow them to control their own biology and even their own minds.

Harari argues that this new era will be a time of great opportunity and great danger. He argues that humans have the potential to create a utopia, but he also argues that they have the potential to create a dystopia. He argues that the choices that humans make in the coming years will determine the future of humanity.

Homo Deus has been praised by critics for its ambitious scope and its thought-provoking ideas. Henderson, Aniela Jaffé, and Jolande Jacobi. The book was first published in 1964, and it is a popular introduction to Jung's theories of the unconscious mind and archetypes.

The book is divided into five parts:

Approaching the Unconscious by Jung
Primitive Myths and Modern Man by Henderson
The Process of Individuation by von Franz
Symbolism in the Plastic Arts by Jaffé
Symbols within an Individual Analysis by Jacobi

In his chapter, Jung discusses the unconscious mind and the archetypes. He argues that the unconscious mind is a vast and complex realm that contains all of our memories, thoughts, and emotions, both conscious and unconscious. He also argues that archetypes are universal patterns of human experience that are found in myths, dreams, and symbols from all cultures around the world.

In their chapters, Henderson, von Franz, Jaffé, and Jacobi explore the role of the unconscious mind in different areas of human life, such as art, religion, and psychology. They also discuss the importance of symbols and their role in helping us to understand ourselves and the world around us.

Man and His Symbols is a classic work of Jungian psychology, and it is still widely read and studied today. The book is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about the unconscious mind, the archetypes, and the role of symbols in human life.

Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-12393505413534653732023-01-12T10:30:00.001-08:002023-03-18T00:04:02.109-07:00The Keepers of the Night by Michael J. The book details the geography, wildlife, and history of Antarctica in great detail, presenting readers with everything they need to know about this remote and mysterious part of the world.

The day begins by outlining the physical characteristics of Antarctica, describing everything from its extreme climate to its unique geological features. He then goes on to introduce readers to the many different species of animals that inhabit the continent, including penguins, seals, and whales. Alongside this, Day explores the importance of Antarctica in the global ecosystem and its role as a research centre for scientists studying topics such as climate change.

The author also delves into the historical aspect of Antarctica, detailing the many expeditions that have been undertaken to explore the region, including those led by early explorers such as Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton. He also looks at the political history of Antarctica, including its role in the Cold War and the formation of treaties that dictate how the continent can be used today.

Overall, Antarctica provides a comprehensive and informative guide to one of the most fascinating and important parts of the planet. Day’s writing is clear and engaging, making it an enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in geography, nature, or history.
Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-698291171949928233.post-15311517286011361862022-08-23T10:30:00.001-07:002022-08-24T10:03:55.967-07:00Images of Jupiter by Webb
It is incredible to see the amount of information these images were taken with WEBB's NIRCam.

You can see many details such as the atmosphere and the Auroras, and the different concentrations, depths and heights of the clouds.

Webb NIRCam composite image of Jupiter from three filters – F360M (red), F212N (yellow-green), and F150W2 (cyan) – and alignment due to the planet’s rotation. Therefore, while the Moon revolves around our planet, there is a certain point in the lunar orbit that is farthest from Earth, called apogee, and another one that is closer, called perigee. The Moon takes approximately one month to complete a full revolution and in that period it will position itself one day at apogee and, a few days later, at perigee. On the other hand, we have the succession of the lunar phases. From Earth, as the Moon revolves around us, we will see how the Sun illuminates different areas of the lunar hemisphere visible from our planet every day. In full phase we see the Moon fully illuminated, 100% full of light reflected from the Sun because the three stars are aligned in this order: Sun, Earth and Moon. When it is full phase, like today, the Moon rises above the horizon when the Sun sets and is visible in the sky throughout the night.

The perigee moon occurs when the full moon phase coincides with the lunar perigee, or at least no more than 10% apart from this point. In such a situation, our satellite can be seen 14% larger and 30% brighter than any other full moon that does not coincide with perigee. But beware! Be very careful: we would need those two full moons in the sky at the same time to compare them and, most likely, we would not notice a difference.

The lunar perigee occurs on June 15, at 01:21 hop (official peninsular time, the one marked by our clocks) with the Moon at 357,434 km. from the earth. The full moon phase is today at 13:52 hop. Therefore, this coming night from Tuesday the 14th to Wednesday the 15th you can take a look to see if you can discern that the full moon looks bigger than any other full moon…

The perigee moon is a usual astronomical phenomenon that has occurred in the past, occurs today and will occur again in the future… next month, on the night of July 13-14, it will happen again. Do not let yourself be influenced by all the commotion that can be organized in the media with this astronomical event. By the way, supermoon is an astrological term (with ele) coined by an astrologer named Richard Nolle to dye as catastrophic the fact of the Moon-Earth closer proximity. It is a term that astronomers do not like at all because it is an unscientific astrological term and, therefore, lacking in any rigor. Do not use it and, please, do not let its use spread.

In the image you have the perigee moon that occurred on February 19, 2019, captured by our colleague César González using a mobile phone attached to the telescope located in the observation tower of the Planetarium.

Credit and image: César González Arranz (Madrid Planetarium).

Francisco Silva (Capitan Nemo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/18272826416917735751noreply@blogger.com0
