The stars are aligning for our biggest month yet! As your Solar System Ambassador and EOP, I am thrilled to kick off the March 2026 Astrophotography Challenge. This month is a dream for both deep-sky hunters and nightscape photographers. We are diving into the heart of "Galaxy Season" and witnessing a rare lunar spectacle!
🎯 March Targets:
The Leo Triplet (M65, M66, & NGC 3628): A stunning group of three spiral galaxies in one frame.
The Owl Nebula (M97): A hauntingly beautiful planetary nebula—the shell of a dying star.
🌟 BONUS SPECIAL EVENT: Total Lunar Eclipse "Blood Moon"! On the night of March 2nd to 3rd, the Moon will turn a deep, crimson red. This is the ultimate photo op!
🗓️ Timing & Conditions:
Eclipse Night: March 2-3 (Don't miss the totality!).
Prime Deep-Sky Window: March 14 – 22.
Moon Watch: Dark skies (~20% illumination) during the mid-month window, ideal for pulling those faint galaxies out of the darkness.
💡 Ambassador Tips for March:
Leo Triplet: These fit beautifully in a wide-field setup; try to capture all three in the same field of view!
Owl Nebula: An OIII filter will help those "eyes" pop.
Blood Moon: Don't just shoot the red phase—try to document all phases of the eclipse!
Look East: Spring galaxy season is beginning; look toward the eastern sky after sunset.
How to Participate: Upload your captures to our Facebook group. Whether it's the wide-field "Blood Moon" over the Las Vegas skyline or a deep dive into Leo, we want to see it!
Clear skies and happy imaging! 🔭✨
