Heading Toward World of Warcraft: Forever — Introducing Astraeos Anemoi, the Scholar of the Firmament

For over two decades, I have walked across Azeroth—from the days when the shadows of the Legion burned in the sky, to the tranquil dawns along the shores of Kul Tiras. But this time, something different calls to me.

A new race rises among the clouds: the Skyborne—children of the air and heirs to the firmament. And from their ranks emerges my new character: Astraeos Anemoi, an arcane mage, a scholar of the cosmos, and a descendant of the ancient winds.

Today, I would like to formally introduce you to my new main character: Astraeos Anemoi.

Origin Story

Astraeos Anemoi. The name possesses a hidden symmetry. In Greek mythology, "Anemoi" serves as a deliberate echo of the ancient lords of the winds, while "Astraeos" evokes the Titan of the stars and winds—a harbinger of his destiny as a weaver of cosmic and celestial forces. Astraeos was born on the Isle of Zephras. Belonging to a new lineage descended from the wind-elves, his heritage was profoundly shaped by high-altitude currents and the astral energies that traverse the skies of Azeroth.

The story of Astraeos begins with the courage of his forebears. The ancestors of the Skyborne were a group of Shen'drelar High Elves from Eldre'Thalas (modern-day Feralas) who opposed their prince, Tortheldrin, in his plan to summon a demon to satisfy his addiction to magic. Fearing that this would draw the Burning Legion, they were branded traitors and forced into exile.

Thousands of years ago, these exiles—Highborne scholars who had fled with their books when the world was sundered—forged a pact with the wind elementals of Skywall. In exchange for shelter on a floating island anchored in the heavens, the winds would protect the Shen'dorei, and in return, the elves would keep the secret. Thus were born the Shen'dorei—the Skyborne—who lived in concealment for millennia.

Generation after generation, the air of Skywall transformed their people. The elders retain the pale skin of the Highborne, but among those born in recent decades, a sky-blue hue has begun to emerge—as if the heavens themselves had taken root within them. The elders call it "the dye of the pact" and debate whether it is a blessing from the elementals or the price for living among them for so long. Astraeos was one of the first children born with skin like that.

Full Biography

Astraeos evolved from a curious child into a scholar of the High Order, and from a scholar into a traveler who descended from the skies to share what he had learned.

Childhood: The Boy on the Edge

He grew up among the archives that the Highborne had salvaged from the fall of their world. While other children learned to glide using the "Walk on Air" technique, he would sit on the terraces at the edge of the island, tracking the movement of the stars with a broken astrolabe he had discovered in a storeroom.

Training: The Geometry of the Heavens

At the age of twenty, he became an apprentice in the High Order—the branch of the Skyborne dedicated to preserving the arcane traditions of their ancestors. His masters had expected a mage of fire or frost, as those are the elements the winds most often demand; yet, Astraeos found himself drawn to the pure Arcane.

To him, arcane magic is not chaos, but the very structure of the cosmos. The orbits of the moons, the curvature of the ley lines, and the rhythm of the celestial tides all follow the same underlying proportions. A well-cast spell is, in essence, a solved equation. He learned to read the ley lines of Zephras Isle as easily as others read a map, drawing upon them to restore his own strength.

His Craft: Jewelry-Making and Enchanting

He soon discovered that starlight could be captured. Through jewelry-making, he learned to cut crystals at precise angles—initially as lenses for observing the heavens, and later as gems capable of storing energy. Through the art of enchanting, he learned to bind that energy into metal, fabric, and stone.

His rings are distinguished by a small constellation engraved on the inside—always the specific constellation that hung above the island on the night he finished the piece. He says that a gem without a piece of the sky inside is nothing more than a shiny stone.

Fishing and cooking: slow, unhurried hours

In between his observations, Astraeos fishes. He claims it is the best lesson in patience there is: a fish, much like a comet, arrives when it chooses—not when you expect it to. He cooks whatever he catches, using his mother’s recipes, and shares the meal with anyone nearby by the fire.

The descent

When the Skyborne decided to emerge from their isolation, the Council of Zephras called for volunteers to travel to the world below. Astraeos was among the first to step forward. Having spent his entire life looking upward, he finally wanted to see Azeroth from within.

Personal motto

"The wind brought me; the stars guided me."

Connection to the Alliance and Azeroth

Astraeos chose the Alliance because he found within it what he values most: people who safeguard, study, and share knowledge.

Why the High Order?

When the Skyborne emerged from their isolation, each group had to make a choice. The Windshapers gravitated toward the Horde, remaining faithful to the elemental pact and the freedom of the winds. The High Order joined the Alliance to preserve their arcane traditions and the order established by their ancestors. Astraeos never wavered; he is, above all, a scholar—and knowledge requires libraries, archives, and allies to protect them.

Stormwind

This human city was his first stop. He is fascinated by its cathedrals, its library, and the faith its people place in the Light. While he does not fully share this faith, he respects it, often spending hours in conversation with priests, debating whether the cosmic order and the Light might be the same phenomenon viewed from different perspectives.

Ironforge and the Explorers' League

This serves as his second home. The dwarves of the Explorers' League study the remnants of the Titans, and Astraeos is convinced that the Titans left maps of the heavens within their ruins. He bears the name of a Titan associated with the stars—a detail he interprets as a sign. For him, Uldaman is a place of pilgrimage.

The Gnomes

He shares with them a deep passion for precision. He crafts lenses for them, while they, in turn, teach him how to construct mechanical mounts for his instruments. With their assistance, he dreams of establishing the first Skyborne observatory on solid ground.

The Night Elves: An Ancient Wound

This is his most delicate relationship. The Kaldorei remember the actions of the Highborne and remain wary of their descendants. Astraeos does not dispute this; he accepts the culpability of his forebears and strives to demonstrate, through his actions, that his people have changed. He visits Darnassus with humility and never uses arcane magic near its priestesses without first asking permission.

Dire Maul and Eldre'Thalas

In the ruins of Eldre'Thalas—known as Dire Maul—dwell the Shen'dralar, the Highborne who remained behind and from whom their own people parted ways millennia ago. To Astraeos, they are both distant kin and a cautionary tale: a glimpse of what becomes of a people who shut themselves away with their own power until they are consumed by corruption. He searches their libraries for the astronomical texts his ancestors were unable to take with them.

His Place in Azeroth

Astraeos seeks neither glory nor conquest. His purpose is to teach. Wherever he makes camp, as night falls, he gathers those who wish to listen and points out the stars—a soldier from Goldshire, a child from Stormwind, a weary dwarf. He believes that a people who learn to look upward also learn to look toward the horizon, and that this is what it means to protect a world.
