Carrot is able to revitalize the Guard, who must discover who is behind the mysterious appearance of a dragon, which are aimed at the restoration of the monarchy in the city. To do so they will have the invaluable help of Lady Sybil Ramkin, an expert aristocrat swamp dragons.

The story follows a plot by a secret brotherhood, the Unique and Supreme Lodge of Brothers elucidated Ebon Night to overthrow the patrician of AnkhMorpork and install a puppet king, under the control of the Supreme Grand Master.
