The book begins with two major events;
First; Captain Samuel Vimes is that is forced by Lord Vetinari to take a group of new recruits for the purpose of ensuring diversity - a dwarf called Cuddy a werewolf called Angua and a troll called Detritus.
The second is that Captain Samuel Vimes, is preparing for his impending nuptials with Sybil Ramkin, the richest woman in Ankh-Morpork.
Continuing the story, we are introduced to Edward d'Eath, a murderer and a son of a noble family, who have lost social status. He is convinced that the restoration of the monarchy in Ankh-Morpork, will solve all problems. Therefore, he is dedicated to researching the history of the royal family and determines that the rightful heir to the throne is, (sorry I will not tell you).
To all this is added a string of seemingly random murders that produce victims among all the guilds of the city, the most surprising thing is that Lord Vetinari prohibits Captain Vimes, to investigate the murders.
