Author Name: H. P. Lovecraft (Howard Phillips Lovecraft)

ISBN: 0785834206

Original Language: English

I have not been able to confirm that there is a Spanish version.

Genre: suspense

Publisher: Castle Books

Current year of publication: 2002

Year of reading: 2017

Additional Information:

This is my first book that I read of this writer (H. P. Lovecraft). Maybe you will ask why I chose to read this book, it has two answers.
The first is that it is a tribute to the father of suspense and detective story, American, Edgar Allan Poe, and his only novel: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, as this work leaves an end unfinished or open to a second part, several Writers have tried to fill the void left by Poe, including my favorite Jules Verne, with the novel An Antarctic Mystery. I could not pass up the opportunity to read what another writer thought for continuity.

The second: I know that there are three films based on this novel and I have seen them all, (In the mouth of madness, The Thing and The Prince of Darkness.) I have also recently heard how several directors have tried to make a new cinematic adaptation without success, as there are several animated cuts and I have already tried the premature access to a PC game, Steam vasado in this novel, I will tell you that I think of that game one of these days.
Well the book is very good but the narrative form is not my style, at first I thought the book was a kind of part two, but I was wrong, because for me the purpose of the book is to explain the strange phenomena of the Poe's book, like those humans do in Antarctica and why they are terrified of everything white and shout Tekeli-li!

Resume of the work:

This story is narrated in the first person by the main character William Dyer, geologist, and professor at the Miskatonic University of Arkham. (I want to clarify that both the university and the city are a fantasy of H. P. Lovecraft, he also invented a river with the name Miskatonic.)
He is part of a massive expedition to Antarctica, which entails a large number of men, dogs, sleds, ships, and planes as well as a large number of supplies and equipment. The objective of this exploration is the obtaining of samples and cataloging of different rocks, minerals as well as the different soil levels. Departing on two ships from the port of Boston, Massachusetts on September 2, 1930. Once settled in Antarctica, January 6, 1931, the expedition will be divided into two groups since Professor Lake of the School of Biology, he was struck by a triangular mark of 30 cm that did not correspond to the area where the rock was, and he left to the northwest with a team of 11 people, leaving as main camp the settlement in McMurdo Bay.

From here all the communications between the two camp and the ship will be by radio, these communications comment the discoveries that the team of Professor Lake, realizes that would be the following: at the beginning he finds some rock formations or constitute alien to everything known at the time and to the great surprise He found a fossil or body shaped barrel and vegetable, with folded wings of 2.5 mt (8 feet) in the shape of a star. and to give the final touch 13 bodies not fossilized but only frozen, 8 of them in perfect condition and 4 only their parts. And as expected to give that touch that something is very wrong... The dogs are restless and dislike the smell of all the body's.
Professor Lake decides to take everything to the camp to make a more detailed study of everything he has found, meanwhile he sends a plane for the protagonist and Professor Frank H. Pabodie. But shortly after a great storm harasses the entire area counting all communications between the camps.

On January 25 the protagonist left with 10 men, 7 dogs, and a sled. Among this man was the student Danfort. they went to investigate Lake's camp that did not respond to radio calls. Once arrived at the camp and after doing some research. The official report that the protagonist gave to the world was that he found 11 dead in the camp because of the cold wind and Gedney disappeared, the rest was censored to the outside world. Actually, the camp was a terrible nightmare come true. No biological specimen was found for entire transport only remains, green 5-pointed steatite, fossil bones of the beings said by Lake, no dog survived, the camp was destroyed, the sleds disappeared, and the drilling machine destroyed, there were 2 damaged airplanes that They were left there. There were no books and scientific instruments. Of the 14 bodies mentioned by Lake, there were 6 buried upright under mounds of 5-pointed stars. It is believed that Lake's group did it. The remaining 8 bodies had disappeared, perhaps dragged by the wind. It is true that 11 people were found dead, including Lake, and that Gedney was missing.
The next day a research flight make only the protagonist and Danfort, and find non-human places, structures, and ruins that resemble paintings by Nikolai Roerich. At Lake Camp, other members arranged the 2 airplanes. The protagonist hid as much as possible the rest of the world so that nobody returned there. On January 28 they returned to the base but further north. Danfort is nervous since he saw something that does not let him sleep.

The Lake report opened the appetite of paleontologists and naturalists and say they will make a new expedition, called Starkweather-Moore. The protagonist will insist on dissuading them from going there.
they make a flight of more than 16 hours where they find entrances of caves, they constitute square, From the air they saw structures that never a man had seen, with strange geometries. They land and make an exploration on foot. They were introduced in caves and their labyrinths, leaving papers so as not to get lost. They miss the fact that there was no wind. In the same system they find all fittings of geometric drawings that spoke of a very advanced wisdom, in these drawings they discover that the pentagrams are the description of these nonhuman beings, come from the stars and as the Dyer  read the book of Necronomicon, ( this book is invented by the writer) the Ancients he call them. Then describe a series of events or the history of these creatures:
The Ancients could make trips in outer space thanks to their wings, when they came from space, annihilate a way of life on earth and create two new, gelatinous bubbles of about 4 m called shogoth and humanoids for their fun and food. The ancients reproduced thanks to a system of spores.
The Ancients, go to war with some seeds of octopus form created by Cthulhu, the Ancients lose and have to give the land to these creatures and they live in the sea. after a series of climatic changes the seeds die and the Ancients recover the land only to be seen in a war with the shogoth that was born in the water, since these were more intelligent. After exterminating them, star the invasion of the extraterrestrial race Mi-go. The latter almost succeeded in exterminating the Ancients, since the Ancients had lost the ability to fly to outer space. so they take refuge in Antarctica.
The protagonist (Dyer) and Danfort, continue their exploration of the tunnels, they are found with areas of unpleasant smell other smelling some petroleum base product, as if in another zone all the lost things of the camp, more ahead they find the sleds disappeared and soon find the dead bodies of Gedney and the dog that was missing, then find the entrance to a great abyss, to pass the abyss find the other four bodies of the destroyed Old ones, the protagonist understands that in the abyss there is Something worse than the Ancients and they start to take off as they are approach by the noise of something like Tekeli-li! They manage to trick him into the caves and come up to the surface and get on the plane and leave the place, meanwhile, Danfort sees something through the window that would leave him traumatized for the rest of his days.

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket-Edgar Allan Poe

Original title: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket

Author Name: Edgar Allan Poe
ISBN: 0008166773
Original Language: English

I have not been able to confirm that there is a Spanish version.

Genre: Lost World, adventure novel at sea and gothic novel

Publisher: Penguin Publishing Group

Current year of publication: 1999

Year of reading: 2017

Additional Information:
Other writers have made a second part of this book my favorite by the time is that of Jules Gabriel Verne The sphinx of the ice.

Summary of the work:
A great novel has served as inspiration to other great writers.
In this exciting novel where Edgar, plays very well with the following topics; riot, carnage, shipwreck, famine, revenge. At the same time he succeeds in submerging the reader in the feelings of abandonment and despair, or of relief and hope.
Edgar's inspiration is probably rooted in the books of J.N. Reynolds, but you can clearly see Edgar throughout the book.
I could not help but notice how Edgar treats African Americans contemptuously in his novel. I do not know if he tried to express his own opinion or if it was only a characterization of his characters.
My preferred part of this novel is the very light but very informative description you can see yourself in a boat or in the mountain edge, the suspense is very well carried, one of my favorite parts is the encounter with the natives and the difficulties that brings the clash of cultures.

I recommend that you read first The Secret History of the Mongols, then the Secret History of the Mongol Queens and finally The Art of War of the Mongols: Genghis Khan and Mongol military system.
If you follow this chronology going to see how fascinating and unknown that was the Mongol Empire. I hope you like it.

Summary of the book:
This book is a serious study of one of the greatest empires that had one of the most organized and modern armies of the time.
You will be introduce to the arming, recruitment, training, and also will be analyze how they managed adapted to fight in different conditions, climates and terrain, always using new and innovative combat tactics and all this for the glory of the Mongol empire.
You will also read about the devastation of Poland and Hungary in 1240, and how was enslaved a large part of the population, so they could not rebel against the Empire. At the same time, is a describe of the battlefield and maps, that show the incredible expansion of the empire, from the heart of Asia to the South Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Sea.
All so will be demonstrate how many of the polar believe and legends about the Mongolian empire, are false or exaggerated, this is due to their tactics and brutality in the battlefield. For example one of the most common mistakes is to believe that the riders attacked so disorganized and taking advantage of their numerical superiority to crush the opposing army, actually they used small Mongol army regiment, led by brilliant generals as Subotai Ba'atur, which came to design practice maneuvers with which he was castrated to improve the quality, flexibility and military organization of the Empire's strength.

In my opinion it is a great book I recommend reading as it allows us to see not only one side of Genghis Khan very unfamiliar, if not the role that the daughters and wives of Genghis played in the Mongol Empire.

In this book we see Genghis Khan, was almost the inventor of the modern era, it is more, there are countries today (which we believe are Westernized) that are more backward than the Mongol empire of the thirteenth century, which is really sad.

In this book we will see one of the most brilliant strategies in political alliances, which were his daughters, who became the spirals that helped lay Gengis and expand their empire.

But unfortunately also tells us the decay of this empire, one of the largest in history, the recipe is almost always the same for all empires. Inept, drunk and useless come to power and with them the end of the golden era.

But all hope for the Mongol empire is not lost, because grace Mandukhai Khatun who was regent until Dayan Khan was old to govern, these two characters succeed in restoring the glory of the empire Mongol and bring order to chaos.

The epilogue is great, please read it. What I liked most is the story of Christopher Columbus, as I did not know.

Summary of the book:

This book tries to be a clarification or explanation of how it has come to events or curren in Darksiders and Darksiders II, so it can be defined as a kind of genesis.

Logically the characters are the riders of the Apocalypse, especially Death and War. Death has been absent for 500 years (this leaves a big question who was responsible for their work all this time?) On his return, he is dedicated to decorate hes world (one of many of this literary universe) directing a simi intelligent creatures and automata. When he recei a no friendly visit Panoptos (A new species of something more intelligent creature and automaton serving blindly the Council Charred) this brings orders of the Council, to investigate an ambush that has suffered a phalanx of the best soldiers of white city, on the border with the garden of Eden. This matter is very serious because it can break the fragile peace that exists between heaven and hell.

The first thing he does is go to investigate what happened, his first surprise is to see that the place where happened the ambush has not corpses or large traces of a battle. Death found a corpse of an angel, Death uses his techniques of necromancy to question the dead angel, during the interrogation, Death is attacked during the assault he discovers that everything is an illusion, using by these angels as defense technique. The angels are uncooperative with Death, but what is clear is that they were waves of humanoids simi intelligent automata and that they were using a weapon of the Nephilim, one of the oldest breeds that were eradicated by Death, this new information worried to Death, because all these weapons were stored in the vault of the Abomination, who he was one of the few who knew where it was.

Death decides to visit the kingdoms of Crowfather, trying not to be noticed, to his surprise, this kingdom is being attacked by waves of humanoids of unknown origin.

So Death and Crowfather join efforts to stop the advance of the enemy, once this is done, Crowfather uses her earrings to revive these humanoids at the same time that Death invokes his spirit for information of who controls them. The information obtained from this being is confirming the worst fears of Death someone wanted to revive the arms of the abomination and Belisatra was who was after controlling everything. But who is this Belisatra?

Death decides to go talk in the Council and meets the other riders of the Apocalypse, to explain the seriousness of the situation and the origin of the vault of the Abomination, once realized this and clarified a problem of authority with the Council. Death is ordered to continue to investigate.

Thanks to the investigations of Death, it is discovered that Belisatra was an apprentice to Gulbannan who was killed a few years ago. Moreover, Gulbannan had been a lover of Lilith. So Death, decides to visit Lilith, in his kingdom Hell!

The encounter between Death and Lilith is not friendly and Death gets very little information.

Death manages to find Belisatra and tries to stop with the help of War, but suffered an ambush by demons, Belisatra uses the chaos to escape.

Death took the War to the planet Ravaiim where he knows Hadrimon and Belisatra would recover the necessary ingredients to awaken the power of the Great abominations, which is the blood of the Ravaiim. Here they are attacked and the angels of the White city are coming to aid Death and War.

The Council reports that there was a new attack but this time they have used one of the weapons of the Abomination, Death concludes silence that they are providing their collection systems of Ravaiim blood.

This leads to a great war that occur several battles through various fields.

Death in the end find out who is managing the conflict since it began, but that information I will not tell you... You have to read the book.

I loved it

Summary of the book:
The book is a translation of the collection of poems of the Chinese people, this work covers since 1122. BCE. until the late twentieth century. In addition, it is mentions all the great Chinese poets like Confucius, Qu Yuan, Wang Wei, Li Bai, Du Fu, Liu Zongyuan, Xue Tao, Yu Xuanji, Meng Jiao, He Zhizhang, Su Shi, Li Qingzhao, Lu Xun, as well as the different philosophies and religious currents  as Taoism, Zen and Buddhism.
The book It is divided into four parts that keep a chronological way from the simple poetry of the year 1122. BCE. Until the twentieth century, I liked the chronology, because you can see how it evolves poetry in China.

-Part One
From before: the beginning, poems are form the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, my favorite The peasant´s song, by anonymous writer

-Part two
A time of trials; Poetry from the end of the Hans Dynasty

-Part three
The Golden Age
Poetry of the T'ang Dynasty, this part I like several and have generally been my favorite

-Part fourth
A few strong voices still singing
Poetry from the Sung, Yuan, Ming, Ch'ing and introduction to the XX century were generally not bad, but neither captive me.

I recommend that you read it, as it lets you see how the thinking of human beings, much like the Greek or Roman but at the time different, because they did not have the influence of these. You can see as always arrived at the same conclusions.
I do not want you to think that this is the only book you have to read on Chinese poetry, it is more an introduction that will allow us to focus on the right direction.

The Martian - Andy Weir

I really liked this book, talk about complex things in a easily way, has good moments, funny and sarcastic conversations.

The novel is about the first human exploration of Mars, and tells the adventures and misfortunes of one of the astronauts of Ares 3 Mission, Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanical engineer for NASA. They have been installed in the region of Acidalia Planitia. The story begins when he is presumed dead, during a storm plaguing the colony, with winds of Category 1 on the scale of hurricane. This storm, threatening the lives of all six astronauts of the mission, so for safe guard the life of the crew, the commander, ordered the abort and return to Earth.

It is during the return to the ship that will take them out of the planet Mars, when a satellite dish, hit Mark, leaving him unconscious, his personal terminal breaks and stop reporting his vital signs.

Once he regains consciousness and manages to heal the wound, began to organize to survive on Mars for a long time, he does not have to worry about oxygen, water, or filters, only food and that's a big problem. Throughout the entire novel.

Mark tell how he adapted the Martian soil to germinate potatoes, which will be the only food source for an entire year.

Mark also tell us, how he modified 2 robotic vehicles, that he will use to reach the landing site of the next mission Ares 4, which is only 3,200 kilometers, which will be in Schiaparelli Crater. However, before that, he makes as a test ride to Aris Valley, which is where the Pathfinder landed is, a failed mission to Mars exploration, to see if he can use parts to enable hem to establish a communication system, with the Earth.

Returned to the colony manages to establish contact with the NASA, which tell hem, that they are sending a rocket with supplies, radios and a large etc.

Shortly after he has an accident and loses his planting of potatoes and the soil that he fertilized. But no panic as supplies will soon leave Earth toward Mars.

But this rocket is destroyed in the take off, so is necessary to use another rocket but this time is all already done by the China, but this new roket will arrive in time to Mars. So it was decided to use as a supply rocket, to the Ares 3 rocket Hermers, which is returning to the Earth, and because it have enough speed to reach Mars again in time to rescue Mark.

Meanwhile Mark is making more changes to come to Schiaparelli crater in time to be rescue. During these modifications overload the electrical system and breaks the radio that can not be repaired. But he still continues with his plans to go.

Once he have everything ready, it starts. During all this time he has been using the satellite Phobos for determine east, west, and the star Deneb in the constellation Cygnus, which indicates north on Mars would be like our North Star.

During his trip discover by chance that there is a sandstorm approaching, which would leave he without electricity, as this is generated by solar panels, after adventures by predicting the size and direction of the storm he avoiding it.

Once he have reached Schiaparelli crater, it is there the MAV rocket, with which can can restore contact with Earth. NASA tells him that need to make drastic changes to the MAV, to allow him to leave Mars and reach Hermes during its flyby of Mars.

Hermes manages to reach Mark, after serious problems in their rocket and voluntary detonated of a bomb in the Hermes ship, to achieve correct meeting point between Hermes and MAV.

I have attached a map, generated by DLR, so you can see what was the route that Mark use on Mars

Love and Math: The Heart of Hidden Reality- Edward Frenkel

Original title: Love and Math: The Heart of Hidden Reality

In this book, Edward is to expose evil grabbing our society work in teaching mathematics as they continue teaching subjects that are very archaic and no new discoveries. I like the explanation that makes of the masters of painting.

Edward tries to explain mathematical ideas and problems that the general public are unknown and are fascinating.

It does so with a very simple format, dare a small autobiography in which he explains as the very young fell in love with mathematics. In this work, also, he exposes the corruption and anti-Semitic hatred of the Soviet Union, and as overcoming all adversity became one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century.

Also, He introduces us to one of the most ambitious projects of mathematics, the Langlands program. This program comes to finding connections or usefulness of a field of mathematics in other fields, and functions as a translation system to which he refers by the name of Rosetta Stone. (The one who helped translate the ancient Egyptian, and we're not talking about the program.) The Langlands program is considered as a Grand Unified Theory of mathematics

I recommend reading it more than once because even though he has done a great job so that the general public can understand the mathematical level of this book, no less is complicated.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea- Julio Verne

Título original: Vingt mille lieues sous les mars.

Attention, the book has a sequel and is called The Mysterious Island

In the year 1866, I was marked by a special event, something unexplained and inexplicable that no one has forgotten. Put aside the rumors which agitated people overexcite ports and public opinion of the continents, boats, foremen and patterns in Europe and Asia, the Navy officers from all countries and governments of the various states the two continents were delivered to the event.

But this increased when the boat Scotland on 13 April 1867, being quietly at sea felt like something he stumbled so mild that notice not only in the engine room, install a des because they informed the captain the boat capsized.

Logically this news was the straw that broke the camel because the phenomenon was becoming hostile, which led to the US Navy for a boat will give chase, this is where comes in three characters that does not leave the scene until the end of the book being Professor Aronnax, his assistant Conseil and the harpooner Ned Land, the professor and his assistant invite you to take part in this expedition while I was harpooner crew. After walking to several leagues across the ocean, they encountered the monster or the artifact but when he was attacked by throwing on the deck with water pipes and power such that in just a second half cuvette do deserted of staff. This boat shot Ned Land and Conseil Aronnx, after a long night was rescued by him showed.

What did they discover? He showed that he is a machine driven by electricity, built by human hands be defying all physical and chemical law. A machine that can soak up to 19 000 leagues withstand pressures impressive variants as well as ocean temperatures and deep seas that could be hot or cold, can be without renewing your indoor air up to 72 hours, and have a capacity for a crew of 600 men, who need to take food, clothing, paper, ink, snuff, and a large etc. Of the land and the sea that provides all you need for it to be rare or unique.

But who had built, where and in charge of this machine who was? Soon discover… The first is that the monster is called Nautilus and Captain Nemo who built them. And this moment des begin a travel through the imagination of this cold man running along the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Southern and northern seas. And visiting the submarine hunt, the Torres Strait, the savages of Papua, the grounding, the coral cemetery, the passage of Suez, imprisonment in the ice, Santoril Island, Vigo Bay, Atlantis, pack ice, the South Pole, the struggle of the Octopus, the tempest of the Gulf Stream, the Avenger ... And that horrible wreck scene with his crew ...! All these events were held in ten months and around the globe with a total of 20 000 Leagues.

Nemo being my favorite character, deserves more description carved. A disciple of Gratioler or Engen had read in his face like an open book. I certainly recognize its key qualities: confidence, as their head stood nobly in the arc formed by the line of the shoulders, and his dark eyes were cold security; calm, as their skin, pale rather than colored, announcing the tranquility of the blood; the value, finally, for his wide breath denoted a vital expansion.

I would add that this man was proud, his gaze reviewed seemed to reflect lofty thoughts, and that of cough this set, the homogeneity of expression in the actions of body and face, following the observation of physiognomy, was an undeniable frankness.
